Mark Darrah, former executive producer of the Dragon Age series, claims EA and BioWare failed to provide adequate support for his team during the initial development phase of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The veteran BioWare developer shared insights about his tenure with the iconic RPG franchise in a recent YouTube video. His account focuses on pivotal events from 2017—what Darrah describes as "the most transformative year in BioWare's history." He discusses how key decisions not only shaped early development of last year's Dragon Age installment but also reveals how shifting priorities coincided with Mass Effect: Andromeda's troubled final production stages.
The timeline begins in late 2016 when Darrah was reassigned to oversee Mass Effect: Andromeda's final push. He recalls his Dragon Age team feeling "abandoned" with "zero institutional support" during this period. While EA hoped his involvement would accelerate Andromeda's completion—freeing resources for Dragon Age—the strategy ultimately backfired.
"This marked our first experience with leadership disruption," Darrah elaborated. "Having a project lead depart mid-development to assist another title while their original project continued was unprecedented. While Andromeda's impact on Dragon Age proved relatively minor due to the short duration, it established a dangerous precedent we'd later regret. Core leadership vacancies create unacceptable risks for any major production."
Following Andromeda's disastrous March 2017 launch, BioWare struggled with EA's newly assertive oversight—leadership Darrah describes as "obsessively hands-on" with development strategies. Despite EA rapidly distancing itself from Mass Effect post-launch, Dragon Age continued receiving inadequate support throughout Andromeda's aftermath.

Darrah reveals he personally raised concerns with EA executives Andrew Wilson and Patrick Söderlund, receiving hollow assurances about Dragon Age's priority. When EA finally allocated minimal 2017 summer resources, BioWare staff received abrupt news about Casey Hudson's surprise return—a seismic leadership change orchestrated without Darrah's input despite his senior position.
"As BioWare's second-most senior figure, complete exclusion from this decision process demonstrated breathtaking disrespect," Darrah stated. "Would my involvement have changed the outcome? Probably not. But for such crucial hires to occur without consulting the studio's leadership hierarchy reveals fundamental organizational dysfunction."
When Darrah predicted BioWare's impending pivot toward Anthem, EA leadership again pledged Dragon Age would remain prioritized—promises that ultimately proved empty.
"History clearly shows what actually transpired," Darrah noted wryly.
EA's Anthem obsession grew until its equally troubled 2019 debut, during which Darrah felt his trust "systematically eroded" through repeated resource diversions from Dragon Age—rebranded as The Veilguard—resulting in what he calls "foundational changes" to the project's vision.
Though Dragon Age: The Veilguard launched successfully in late 2024 (earning our 9/10 review), EA later deemed its commercial performance underwhelming, claiming it failed to achieve mainstream appeal. Former BioWare developers publicly disputed this characterization, with some advocating for Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 approach as superior model.
The studio's January shift toward Mass Effect 5 development triggered significant Dragon Age team layoffs.
