Assassin's Creed Valhalla's extensive playtime prompted Ubisoft to refine its approach for the upcoming Assassin's Creed: Codename Red. Feedback regarding the length of the main plot and abundance of optional content has been addressed. The team aims for a more streamlined experience.
Game director Charles Benoit stated that completing the main storyline of Codename Red will take approximately 50 hours, with full completion (including all regions and side quests) estimated at 100 hours. This contrasts with Valhalla's minimum 60-hour main story and potential 150-hour full completion. Ubisoft has reportedly reduced optional content to avoid overwhelming players, striving for a better balance between narrative and side activities. The goal is to maintain the richness of the world and depth of the story while mitigating tedium.
The developers aim to cater to both types of players: those who prefer a richer, more expansive experience and those focused primarily on the narrative. Neither group should be forced to compromise.
Game director Jonathan Dumont highlighted the impact of the team's research trip to Japan on the game's development. The scale and detail of Japanese castles, mountainous landscapes, and dense forests significantly influenced their approach. This led to a focus on enhanced realism and detail.
One key change is a more realistic representation of world geography. Travel times between points of interest will be longer, reflecting the distances in real-world Japan. However, this increased travel time is offset by a greater level of detail and nuance in each location. This contrasts with Assassin's Creed Odyssey's more densely populated map. Codename Red will feature a more open, natural world, with locations boasting significantly higher detail to immerse players in the Japanese setting. Dumont emphasized the significantly increased level of detail contributing to a more authentic Japanese atmosphere.
