Diablo 4 Originally Designed as a Roguelite

Initially conceived as a drastically different title, Diablo 4's development path took an unexpected turn, according to Diablo 3 director Josh Mosqueira. Instead of the familiar action-RPG formula, the game was envisioned as a punchier, action-adventure title with permadeath mechanics, reminiscent of the Batman: Arkham series and incorporating roguelite elements.

This alternate vision, codenamed "Hades," involved an over-the-shoulder camera perspective, more dynamic combat, and the unforgiving consequence of permanent character death upon defeat. This departure from the established Diablo formula was championed by Mosqueira, who sought to revitalize the franchise after the perceived shortcomings of Diablo 3.

However, as detailed in Jason Schreier's book "Play Nice: The Rise and Fall of Blizzard Entertainment," several challenges ultimately derailed the "Hades" project. The ambitious co-op multiplayer aspects, designed to mirror the Arkham games, proved particularly problematic. Internal debate arose questioning whether the core Diablo identity was being preserved, with concerns that the altered gameplay, controls, rewards, monsters, and heroes created a game fundamentally distinct from its predecessors. Ultimately, the team concluded that "Hades" might be better suited as a completely new intellectual property.

Despite this shift in direction, the recently launched "Vessel of Hatred" expansion for the released Diablo 4 offers players a substantial new adventure within the familiar Diablo universe. This DLC delves into the nefarious plots of Mephisto, one of the Prime Evils, transporting players to the ominous realm of Nahantu in the year 1336.
